1987 Toyota Celica brake lights on

The brakke lights stay on even when not pushing the brake peddle

Check your brake light switch, maybe defective. Above the brake pedal is a switch with two wires ( not sure if is two). The above metal arm of the brake pedal is leaning on this brake switch (off position). When you step on the brake pedal, the above metal arm does not touch the switch, ON position which turns on the brake light.
