Water sloshing noise and fuel odor

2002 Toyota Camry - 167,000 miles - AT 4-cyl. On occasion there is a strong smell of gasoline near the gas tank on the outside of the car after I've driven and parked it. Although it is more prevalent on the outside, it does occasionally enter the inside of the car. There is no pattern to it; happening when the fuel is both full and close to empty and driving both short and long distances. The second issue is the sound of "water sloshing" under the hood/dash area, most noticeably when I turn and sometimes when I'm stopped at an intersection and then proceed across. Since I've been using the AC quite a bit I thought the water sound was probably related to that. The fuel smell concerns me more. Do you have any advice or info on what is causing these two problems?
