The is smoke coming from the vents when I use the air conditioner. I seems to happen in the mornings on my drive to work but not in the afternoon on my drive home. Not yet anyway. There is no odor. There is a Firestone Car Center close to my home. Would you recommend it for the needed repairs?

If it is smoke, I would recommend having it checked. Since there is no odor, chances are it isn't the heater core.

Its not just cold condensed air is it? If the relative humidity is high you will get what looks like smoke but its just cold air mixing with hot humid air.

That is possible. Does it evaporate right away?

Both the fan light and vent selection backlit switches appear to be burnt out. How does this section of the dashboard come out?

Toyota Camary 2003, 10400 miles and V4 engine.

This car started stinking again about 3 months ago.
A foul smell comes from the vents. The car does not have to be running nor does the air conditioner need to be on to smell the stench. When you open the door the stench hits you in the face. There are no leaks or any mechanical thing going on with the car that I can see.

In August 2005 a rat was in my blower box (motor) and when I started the car it killed it. The rat was in the car for three days before I took it to the shop.
The rat had started to decay and there were maggots, guts and blood all in the blower. The dealer cleaned and bleached the grid in box of the blower. Once the bleach wore all the smell was still there. Over a period of a year the stench was finally gone. Is it possible for the stench of the rat to start up again? Should the vent tubing and blower box be replaced because the stench is embedded in the material? The dash board was removed and cleaned back in 2005 also. If it is not the rat stench coming back what could it be? It just stinks.

My camry is making a low whistling noise that appears to come from the dash vents. It only occurs now and again and in no particular time. Some time when I brake slightly, sometimes when I turn the steering slightly, sometimes when I hit a bump in the road. So you see, it has no particular order of events! I have vacuumed out the vents as best I could, as I thought I may be a loose piece of padding, or maybe a leaf that entered the outside vent. Who knows? Do you?

Hi there,

you will have to narrow this down a bit, make a note of when it happens, and where the vents are, as you say it may be something stuck in the vents, you can pull the fan motor out and check in there as well.

Hi Mark,
I have narrowed it down to only when the aircon is operating. With just the fan, it did not whistle, but when I switched on the aircon, after a period, it gave that low whistle - even when the car came to a stop, it whistled at me!
Regards,
Tony T

Hi there,

If it is only whistling with the A/C on you may have a problem in the evaporator icing up a little, have the pressures of the A/C checked and see what the results are.
