2002 Toyota Camry Repair Question

2002 camry no zip, torgue w/ manual transmission
I have a Toyota Camry w/ manual transmission 55000 miles and recently after a 2 hr trip I had a hard time when shifting. The engines RPM went up to 4-5000 with little pressure on the gas, at 60 mph, usually just under 3000. From a stop to first it would race again. Shifting through each of the gears at low speed was difficult to reach speed, all the time though the engine was winding. I was close to home and took it easy, after getting in there was a smell of what may be overheating parts and an intense odor. I am afraid to drive again, until I can check the problem, or even if it could be something else, hope you can help! Thanks
