2001 Toyota Camry Heater not working/Engine overheating

2001 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 137000 miles
I was recently hearing a loud squealing or screeching noise when I first started the car, but it would stop shortly after or if I accelerated the car it would stop.
The noise has stopped but recently, after driving the car for 15-20 minutes, the temperature gauge starts jumping from the middle to overheating and back down...
When the car is accelerating, the temp is fine, but when I come to a stop, thats when the temperature gauge starts going up, which is what is puzzling me...
