The car shakes (quite a bit actually) when its idling or in low speeds, for example when I am stopped at a light. It seems to shake a lot less when I put it in neutral. The check engine light also started blinking. Someone told me could be a dirty air filter, which I am going to replace anyway, because it is dirty and I have not done it in a long time. What else could cause this?

Thanks

We need to start with two things. First, we need to find out what codes are there in order to determine next proper steps.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

Once we know the code we will go from there. However, we also need to check the purge solenoid because if that is sticking open that this will cause the exact issue you are seeing. It will also cause the engine to run rich and can cause the check engine light to flash.

Please see the info below. Let me know what questions you have, and we can go from there.

Thanks
