my car dies in every gear except park and reverse. This happened after I jumped it one time and heard a loud noise like a backfire only it came from under the hood of the car. Do you know what the problem might be?

If the car is equipped with a timing belt, check to make sure that it has not jumped a tooth or more. If the camshaft to crankshaft timing is off, even by one tooth, you would get the back-fire that you are talking about.
