2002 Suzuki XL7 4 hweel drive has thunking sound

The other day I used 4HI to get most of the way up my driveway. As I crested the grade into the parking area the tires began slipping. I stopped before digging in and changed to 4 LO while in Neutral. I put it into drive and gave it some gas. Almost immediatly I heard a loud low POP! I shifted out of 4 LO and back in. Tried again and same problem.
I backed down the driveway in 4 LO all teh way heading a loud low ticking sound all the way. Now the loud ticking/thunking sound occurs in both 4HI and 4LO but not in 2wd.
