2004 Suzuki Forenza

I went to auto zone for a domestic test cause my check engine light was on. It said my coolant was low, or it can be thermostat defective or engine coolant temperature sensor. I put the coolant and the check engine light is still on. What can I do before bring it to a auto repair shop?
