Truck suddenly runs rough and engine lite came on. Changed mass airflow sensor, no help. Older code scanner will not connect to truck. Smell of gas at tail pipe running rich. Any suggestions?

Running rough is the typical sign of a misfire, usually spark-related. Diagnostic fault codes won't tell you which cylinder(s) are misfiring on a '95 and older vehicle. If you can't read the fault codes, start with the basics; spark plugs and wires.
