1986 Subaru XT steam from turbo

1986 Subaru XT 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 100000 miles
my xt has steam coming out of the turbo intake. What could be the cause of this? Also I have a very noisy lifter, are these hydrolic or can they be adjusted?
