Transmission problem

My wife and I have a 2000 Subaru Outback with 78,000 miles on it. The car over the last few months has had a progressive problem with the transmission. When we pull it out of park then into drive the transmission will at times hesitate before engaging. Now it's to the point where it does it on a regular basis and sometimes my wife will call to tell me that the transmission is in drive but yet the car won't move at all. She'll wait for awhile moving it to different gears and accelerating slightly when she puts it back into drive. Sometimes it works and other times she has to call someone to pick her up. Any ideas as to what the problem could be? We just don't want to pay $2000 for a different transmission. Please help if you can. Thanks
