HI, we bought a used 2001 Subaru Ooutback Wagon from the original owner last December (for around $10,000). It had about 75,000 miles at that time, had never been in an accident had been well maintenced and never needed much in the way of repair. Six months later we had to replace/or fix (I'm not sure) the front axle which was knocking. Last month the check engine light came on for the second time and would not go off. We were told we had to replace two computers related to the catalytic converters (which cost a pretty penny!). The car now has about 89,000 miles on it and last week the front end started knocking again. Two days ago the check engine light came on again. Are we going to have to pay thousands to fix this thing again? Did the mechanics do a bad job or fix the wrong thing? Is this car just a dud? Help! We can't afford all these problems.

PS I have no idea what the engine size is....I think it is a 2.4 something...

Hi there,

You will have to get an opinion from a recommended technician as to the knock noise, if it is when turning, more than likely the CV joints are worn, if this was the case last repair, second hand units or a quick fix might have been undertaken as new CV's should last many years. As for replacing computers (two!) for the cat converters, that is unbelievable to say the least. I would want to see the test report on the failed ECU's they don't often fail and if so are often easily repaired. I would be very concerned about that. Have the fault codes read, it might be a very simple fix. Get a second opinion if your concerned. Its your money, don't be dictated too.
