Rough running midrange

I have a 1986 Subaru GL, 1.8L Carb, manual trans, dealer installed AC, No pwr steering. It has 110,000 miles.

The carb was replaced with a rebuilt unit at about 75,000 on the advice of our mechanic, (since retired). Plugs, wires, cap and rotor replaced about 3 months ago, and timing checked. Compression is good on all cylinders. The car is in very good condition and gets an oil change every 2500-3000 miles.

The problem is an intermittent rough midrange.
The engine starts and idles fine. No misses at idle. However once above about 2500 rpm the engine begins to miss and stutter. Sometimes very badly. I have driven home at times at 30mph because that is all the car will do. Sometimes the car runs perfect. No missing whatsoever. Other times it will barely run.

If during one of these roughs periods, I floor the accelerator, the car will eventually speed up beyond the rough patch, (about 2500 to 3500) and will gradually pick up speed, but even at higher rpm's seems to miss a little.

When this problem started I changed plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. The timing was spot on and was not wavering.

The warm idle is steady at about 980 rpm. Turning on the AC bumps the idle to 1020. Turning the AC on or off doesn't seem to make a difference.

The gas appears good with no water visible, however I did replace it with some new gas, and have added gas a couple of times since but it did not seem to make a difference.

I'm not sure where to check next. Any help would be appreciated.?

Two items to check, the distributor vacuum advance, and the catalytic converter and exaust for a restriction or broken converter bed. To check for an exhust problem get a vacuum gauge and hook it up to manifold source, take initial reading, then watch the gauge if it start to loose vacuum, the exhuast could be restricted. Test the vacuum advannce or mechanical advance with a timing light for mechanical, and a vacuum pump for the other.

The vacuum advance and exhaust seem fine. Checked fuel pump and output seemed low so replaced it. Problem continues as stated above. Sometimes will not run at all. Appears like not getting fuel?
