Metal-on-metal squeak when start acceleration from a stop

1998 Subaru Outback Wagon Limited 91,000 miles. Stick shift. Intermittently, hear a fairly loud metal-on-metal squeak when starting to accelerate from a stop. Sounds like the metal-on-metal squeak when b-r-a-k-e-s start to go, but it's not the b-r-a-k-e-s: (1) Took it to the shop , they said the brake pads had plenty. However, I described the problem to them incorrectly. Not until after they said the brakes were fine did I realize... (2) it occurs NOT upon stopping, but on acceleration from a dead stop e.g. a red light, etc. Especially bad when making a "three-point turn" (which I do daily). Want to give the shop guys a heads up, because they didn't try very hard last time to detect the problem.
