ENGINE STALL AND GEAR CHANGE ISSUES

Engine Mechanical problem

We recently bought a 1996 Subaru Liberty with 312,000kms (first mistake).

We degreased the engine to check on oil leaks and the Check Enginge light started coming on everytime we drove the car. Mechaninc checked the computer and the light is no longer on all the time. Also changed the oil filters at this time.

Recently the car has started stalling when coasting in to a stop eg: stop sign or lights or even just coasting down a hill. You could put it in park and start it straight away.

Took it to the mechanic again and the Air Flow Meter was the fault that came up on the computer so this and the associated sensor was changed. Drove fine for one day then next day car stalled several times in a row then would not start again.

Came back next day to pick car up and unplugged and plugged back in a few of the electrical sensors. Car started fine and ran fine. Mechanic put old Air Flow Meter and sensor back in.

Car still stalls sometimes but not everytime you coast. Generally will if you try and accelerate quickly. It seems to struggle with gear changing, will get up over 3000rpm for longer than normal before dropping back/up a gear.

Sorry this is such a long winded question. Has anyone else had this problem or know what things to be looking for? Discovered mechanic we took it to does not have a very good reputation.
