1994 Subaru Legacy starting problem

1994 Subaru Legacy 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 168230 miles
vehicle will not crank occasionally(once every few months or so). previos owner would jump hot baterry post to solenoid to start then alright for months, suspect that it is neutral position switch. need to know where this is located and if this sounds reasonable nad any other suggestions.
