Rear drum brakes

1998 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 216000 miles
I would like to take off the rear drum brakes to inspect. The drum will not slide off. I have tapped it, let the parking break all off, and pried it. when I pull on it you can feel the spring tension, like the pads have worn into a grove and can't pop out.
