2002 Subaru Forester o2 sensor problems

2002 Subaru Forester 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 160000 miles
Right after replacing a very bad o2 sensor the car was not pulling in gear at all, so we checked the tranny fluid. It was pretty low but we filled it up, and we are waiting for the liquid to settle in to make sure it is at the proper level. But, the check engine light is still staying on and the car is now pulling but is still lacking in reaction. Do we just need to add more fluid? Why is the o2 sensor still coming back bad?(its brand new and fits perfect, numbers and sizing) pleas help!!
