This 2.2 sounds like a sewing machine. Oil pressure is good and engine oil is clean. Do these engines have have problems with timing chain tensiioners failing or lifters collapsing causing noise. There are no codes or running issues other than the noise.I recall older saturn 4 cyls. Wearing out chain guides and having the same noise. Anyone ever had this problem. What should I replace to solve the issue, thanks.

Hi blustrat6, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation

When was your last oil change and filter? Could also be a leakdown problem with the lifters

Date: July 27, 2009

Subject: Information on Internal Engine Noise or Damage After Oil Filter Replacement

Models:
2010 and Prior Passenger Cars and Trucks (Including Saturn)
2010 and Prior HUMMER H2, H3
2009 and Prior Saab 9-7X

This bulletin is being updated to add model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 07-06-01-016A (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

Important
Engine damage that is the result of an incorrect or improperly installed engine oil filter is not a warrantable claim. The best way to avoid oil filter quality concerns is to purchase ACDelco(R) oil filters directly from GMSPO.

Oil filter misapplication may cause abnormal engine noise or internal damage. Always utilize the most recent parts information to ensure the correct part number filter is installed when replacing oil filters. Do not rely on physical dimensions alone. Counterfeit copies of name brand parts have been discovered in some aftermarket parts systems. Always ensure the parts you install are from a trusted source. Improper oil filter installation may result in catastrophic engine damage.

Refer to the appropriate Service Information (SI) installation instructions when replacing any oil filter and pay particular attention to procedures for proper cartridge filter element alignment. If the diagnostics in SI (Engine Mechanical) lead to the oil filter as the cause of the internal engine noise or damage, dealers should submit a field product report. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 02-00-89-002I (Information for Dealers on How to Submit a Field Product Report).

Sir I installed a new MG filter but the noise is still there. Will the lifters eventually pump back or is the damage to top end permenant.I only ran engine for a few minutes. Is there any chance for this 2.2?

Did you soak the lifters before installation and use lube grease on the lifter face-Permanent damage -Its hard to say the camshaft plays a role with the lifters they work together just in the case of the cap and rotor.

Verify the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to rule out a weak oil pump or a sticking open oil pressure relief valve

Where exactly is the noise coming from is it right on top the head/manifold or within the front cover of the engine-? Let me know asap

I have a 2006 Saturn Vue. I recently got an oil change and my car seems to be running harder and louder when I drive. The problem begins when driving between 30mph - 35mph and then gets louder from there. What can the problem be?

I would check the oil level first especially after just getting a oil change. Low oil level will effect pressure and not enough oil will make the engine louder.

Hi I have a 2004 Saturn Vue. Starting hearing this noise from engine area like a whooping sound. Sounds like a sewing machine sound. Its making this sound when you would take off from a dead stop and when you get close to slowing down. It gets faster or slower with the engine rpms. It does get louder right before you slow down and when its going faster you dont hear it hardly since its going faster. One thing I did notice is when idling in driveway in park and neutral you hear it slighty but in drive and reverse you do not hear the noise. I cannot pinpoint it at this time.

Thanks for your help! Dan

Just to add to this one do you have a 4cyl vue if so is it a automatic? If thats the case then its probably the belt in the transmission making noise very common on those vues.I have repalced a lot of transmission side covers for that noise. Will make that noise in park and when you put it in drive and take off will sound like a sewing machine.

My 2003 VTi trans was rebuilt because the car would not move forward in Drive after being in Park or Reverse without waiting for quite a few seconds and making engine noise without going anywhere at first. Then finally it wouldn't go at all in Drive, woiuld move in Reverse. Two days after I got my repaired car back, it would not go in Drive without a delay, again. What else could it be?

Probably a bad pump or valve body most likely the valve body have them do a pressure test on it that will tell them if its a pressure problem they probably never checked the pressure. They probably just put a side cover in the transmission. Let me know what they find.

Hi yes its a 4 cyl and automatic.I jacked it up on one side and put it in drive then got under vehicle and heard that noise in that area thinking it might be the cv joint. When u say transmission side cover is this acessable without taking transmission apart? What am I looking at as far as price and labor since I will be taking it in for inspection tmro.

Thanks 4 your help!

Its called the side cover it has the input shaft output shaft the drive belt etc. You have to drop the sub frame exhaust remove the transmission remove the transmission valve body torque all the bolts and remove the side cover. But before you do all that you have to have a complete pressure test done to make sure you dont have a pressure issue that caused the noisey side cover.I have seen some bad valve bodys and pumps on those transmissions. Its very expensive to do thousands of dollars. Just the side cover is several thousand plus labor. How many miles do you haveon your vue?

Then your out of luck there saturn was going up to 100,000 miles or so many years if there was a problem with the transmission they were helping out with the repairs. You can try contacting gm customer care center and see what they say its worth a try. But a 100,000 miles is industry standard for the life of a car these days. So the noise is coming from the transmission?
