1997 Saturn SW1 Check Engine Light

Computer problem
1997 Saturn SW1 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 208000 miles

I brought my car to be inspected in Mass. It passed all emissions and everything it needed to to get a valid sticker, but I was given a Reject sticker, because the emission machine could not read any internal mileage??? The mechanic asked me if I had replaced the battery and I said I had just a few days prior...and he stated that was the reason the computer spit out a Reject sticker...I would have to drive the car about 200 miles and bring it back (providing the check engine light does not go on) and he would be able to replace the reject sticker with a valid one...My car has over 208,000 miles on it. It is a 1997 Saturn SW1 manual transmission, 4 cyclinder engine.
