I have a 1994 saturn 5 speed twin cam SIR or SL2.

My car's transmission got stuck today as I was backing up and I cant get it back into nuetral. I bought DOT 3 Brake Fluid and made sure all brake systems were topped off with DOT 3, but it is still stuck.

please help me trouble shoot ideas and do you know where the transmission dip stick is located on this model? I have never had such a hard time trying to look at ther transmission.

U said its stuck in reverse did the shifter go limp?Did the clutch pedal get soft u said u tried to add fluid so thats what I picture happened when u said that. The dip stick is almost directly below the brake master cyclinder it has a red top. Let me know what u find and what color the fluid is.

I am not sure what it got stuck in. I was about to (or did and dont recall) to put it in reverse. The car stopped suddenly like I softly rolled back on a curb (thats the way I can describe it). It did not die until I started trying to shift the gears and it did not want to move. I was scared I was going to break it.

The fluid in the resevoir(msp).

Clutch pushed in lets me still start it but not moving when I try to shift it like it froze. Had to come home to use computer and would like to have some troubleshooting steps before I drive back out there.

Sounds like the transmission jambed up in reverse have u ever changed the transmission fluid I have seen people never change it and ruin there transmission. Thats why I asked when u check the fluid level to let me know what color it is.U can tell alot by the color if its like a greyish sliver then u have metal in the trans meaning things comming apart inside it. If its all jambed up theres really not alot of advice I can tell u if u cant shift then it needs to be looked at further to tell if it can be fixed or replaced usually if it has to be torn apart its cheaper to get a used transmission they tear it down and fix it. But iam not saying it needs to be replaced iam not there to look at it. But let me know if the trans has fluid in it and what color also if u can get it out of reverse. Let me know what u find.

Thank you for the advice, really! I went and after I found the stinking dip stick (i felt like one). It was behind in stead of up front and earlier I did not have a flashlight but found it. It was as black as everything else but cleaned it off and started trying to get an accurate reading and it was low but not like I thought it would be. After checking it a few times the color looked like oil but very transparent almost how you want the oil to look, but it was trans fluid. (Almost brown but not quite). Hope that does not confuse you, I am a layman mechanic, and an even worse speller.

Is it possible for the cluth to break a cable or a wire or something?

If the clutch cable broke then the shifter would go limp.U can check and see if cable came off the trans it's held on by a h shaped clip they come off some times but usually they just don't shift into certain gears. The fluid should be bright red it's trans fluid in there sounds Like it hasn't been changed in a while though that might be the problem causing the the trans to fail. Check out those cables on the trans also pull the shifter boot up check and make sure that that end of the cable hasn't came loose ethier. Let me know what u find.

My name is Louie by the way nice to meet u. Iam helping u because that's what were here to do help people out people with there Cars. No my shop isn't in Houston. Iam California I worked for Saturn for over 16yrs all the dealers are closing even the one I worked at got laid off. Which was a good thing actually I have wanted to get out of cars and used my time to go back to school to work on windturbines which I finshed and iam now looking for a job in the wind industry. Now I use my time till I find a job giving back sharing my knowledge of fixing cars with those in need feels pretty good. Well enough about all that. When I was talking about under the boot I was talking about inside the car at the stick for the cables comming off. And the h shapes clips are outside under the hood. Honestly haven't seen many of those transmissions fail there really good the only times have seen them fail was lack of maintance not changing the fluid and failing that way. Or someone driving it with a bad clutch or bad clutch master and damaging the transmission or not driving a stick the right way and damaging it. Ur clutch pedal is firm right? Also ur clutch does release right?I have also seen the cables stretch where they pull out of there crimped end and u can see bare cable that happens at the end where it attaches to the trans under the hood. But that won't cause the trans to jamb in reverse. Let me know about theses things after u go look at the car again and find out if the cables are attached. But being jambed in gear isn't looking too good.
