no its not chain driven theres a input and output shaft with planatery grears that transfer the power of the engine.why what kind of problems are u having with it?

it is my son in law's vehicle and he is experiencing rough gear changing and clunking while driving at most speeds especially noticable when accelerating or slowing down...?

It sounds like a pressure problem in the transmission does it clunk into every gear?also are there any codes in the transmission computer u will have to have more then ur average auto parts store code reader to get the codes out.let me know what u find so I can help u better.
