Saturn 2000 SC1 Computer Dead?

My wife has a 2000 Saturn SC1. It has about 90,000 miles on it and except for minor stuff like brake replacements and a fuel pump, never had any problems. Recently it just wouldn't start. No issues led up to this. The Saturn repair folks says that the computer is completely gone (1200$ to replace w/labor)

I'm going to show my ignorance when it come to cars. I work as an engineer for camera systems and I just don't see how a computer can just suddenly go. Is there no type of software reloading, board replacement or something that can be done? I'd love to know more about this because I'm rather confused. A computer is a computer, right?

Thanks!

I understand your frustration and grief. If it truly is a computer I would find one from a recycler (junk yard) for $100 or less. I would advise a second opinion before spending that sort of money.

If you want to try to diagnose it your self let us know. It is easy to start with a simple test for spark.

Good luck and let us know.
