There is a coolant temperature sender that often cracks on these. The result very well can be a rich condition as you have. Reasonably inexpensive part available aftermarket.

I've got another post here regarding a difficult-running engine, and I've learned some as I've read and purchased parts. I also have a 92 saturn, SL2. The Engine coolant temp sensor could do it. So could a stuck EGR valve. With the engine not running identify the EGR valve (gold-colored muschroom-like valve mounted on the right side of the engine valve cover) and feel underneath it to see if you can feel the valve diaphram. You should be able to push it up with your finger. If it moves then the valve is closed (you lifted it with your finger pressure). If it doesn't move it might be stuck open, and causing problem.
