I have a 98 saturn with 178k miles. Overheating while driving, could not get to cool down. Then heard loud pop with tons of white smoke pouring from under hood and exhaust. Was able to make it home. Upon opening the hood oil all over left side of engine. Could this be blown gasket and water pump?

I had the same problem with my 98 Saturn (didn't blow though) but couldn't figure out what was wrong, when I got home, I found an Air Head wrapper stuck on the side of my radiator, blocking airflow. You might check to make sure your radiator isn't blocked off, then your fuse to your pump, then let your car idle and see if it automatically cools off just a little past the half way mark on your temp gauge, if not, it's probably a bad pump.
