2006 Saturn Ion trans harsh shift

I have a 2006 Saturn Quad coupe 2.4 and all of the sudden when I put the shifter into drive or reverse there is a harsh jolt and also when shifting in low gears it bang into gear. i disconnected the battery and the problem goes away for about 20 miles and then all of the sudden the problem reoccurs. Any ideas would help
