2005 Saturn Ion noise gets louder as i accelerate

2005 Saturn Ion 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 77000 miles
While driving my 05 ion yesterday, i noticed a weird "vroom" noise coming from my engine. I noticed it gets louder as I accelerate...it doesnt start til i reach 20mph, but once i go past that, it gradually gets louder the faster i go. Once I release the gas and it gets below 20 mph, the noise goes away, you can actually hear it slowing and going away when I release. I'm afraid to go past 45-50mph with it because it feels like the car is "heavier" i suppose.
