1991 Saab 9000 Timing chain pivot guide removal

1991 Saab 9000 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 127000 miles
I am replacing all components for both timing and balance chains on this vehicle, I have been able to remove all parts, other than the timing chain pivot guide. It seems the "pin" or pivot "post" is slightly too long to allow the guide to slide off the post before the top of the guide contacts against the cylinder head.. it seems I need to remove the pivot "pin" or "post" or remove the head, which seems extreme..am I missing something?
