1999 SAAB 9-5 Repair Question

1999 Saab 9-5 99 SAAB 9-5 SE
Shakes or Wobbles problem
1999 Saab 9-5 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 130,00 miles
Car began to shimmy violently from left to right -- steering wheel pulled in both directions -- after engine was replaced. (Don't ask!) Brakes smelled hot. No error lights or system check failures, gauges all normal, although engine does surge +500 RPM on uphill pulls. Mileage has declined from >30 mpg to ~18 mpg.
Just replaced front rotors, and pads, adjusting calipers. Mechanic assures rear brake assembly is all-good. Problem remains, although slightly improved. What to check next?
