I have a 1971 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow that has just had a new starter put on.

As I drove out of the shop I noticed a big oil blot on the floor. Back and up on the lift. Started car and saw oil streaming behind the rear engine main seals.

Questions: What caused this phenomena? These were not just droplets. This was a oil spewing out with some pressure behind it. I think.

Could this sudden leak (car did not leak before it got to the shop) havfe been caused by the R & R of starter?

Could the oil lined to the sending unit been severed/cut?

Any advice about troubleshooting?

If the source turns out to be the rear seal, what procedures should the mechanic adopt?
