2004 Renault Scenic engine mgmnt light

the dreaded light is on,and the message says.check emissions what does it mean and do i need to take out a mortgage to get it fixed

If the vehicle is running as normal .. the light could be on as it has picked up on an intermittent fault .. you need to have the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic computer to locate the exact cause ..it could be something as simple as 1 misfire at some stage and the light just needs turning off to clear the fault code from the cars computer memory ..
