1993 Renault R19 Stuck in 3rd gear

When I start my Renault 19 the warning light comes on and it will not shift from 3rd gear. Sometimes when the temp gauge is at half way I can stop the car and restart it, and it goes back to normal but this is becoming less and less. My mechanic has no idea what is wrong but I believe this is a common problem? Any ideas?

Sometimes the pressure switch on top of the trans leaks and it will feed trans fluid to the PCM causing all sorts of ghost problems. Start by checking the PCM plug for any moisture/oil and the connector on top of the trans
