2005 Pontiac Vibe Replacement of dash

2005 Pontiac Vibe 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic
My folks have a 2005 Pontiac Vibe, the fuel gage quit working, the dealership told them the whole dash has to be replaced because everthing is shorted out. Something doesen't sound right here, never heard of a whole dash needing replacement because a gage quit working, and what could have caused a short that would knock out everything?
