2003 Pontiac Montana Pressing axle spindle out of hub

Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
2003 Pontiac Montana 6 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 80000 miles

I've finished the job of replacing a rear wheel hub/bearing, so I am not in trouble. But I have a question. I was alarmed when I was using the special puller for the axle spindle because the axle spindle would creep forward again into the splined shaft in the hub when I relieved the force in the puller. It was almost as if there was a spring inside the outer CV joint pressing the spindle back outwards. Eventually I forced the spindle all the way in so it fell off the inside of the hub, which worked, although it was scary. There isn't a spring in the CV joint, right? Why was there outward force in the axle?
