I have a knock coming from the left valve cover in my 1987 pontiac grand prix with a 305 v-8 with about 187,000 miles. Im going to be using it as a race car so is this something to worry about.

What is it a knocking /tapping /ticking? Have you ever seen a push rod goes right thru the valve cover I have on a 409 engine.

My advise is check it out before its too late.

I would say it is kind of a tapping more than a knock I took the valve cover off other than some build up of old dried oil it seemed normal.

Some build up of old dried oil -those things ( sludge )can clogged up oil galleries and oil will not make it all the way up to the valvetrain causing weird noises. Try adjusting the valve lash won't eliminate the noise, consider lifters/camshaft they're partners in crime.

Or its time for a Valve Job to get the valvetrain up to snuff.
