Hi, I have a 2004 pontiac grand prix 104000 miles that I drive for work. Transmission has had erratic shifting and slipping issues since 30k dealerr always siad no problems found when under warranty. Anyway car is way out of warranty and trans is now very bad. It slips terribly when cold I have changed fluid several times over last 70000even tried some "snake oil additives" which I figure got me this far. It slips in 1st, slips 1-2 shift, 2-3 flares etc. Once its warmed up a bit it generally works but has eratic shift points hard / slipping shifts. It gets me through my day but it needs to be solved before it leaves me stranded. No trouble codes form my actron scanner. Dealers and trans shops want to rebuild trans and replace convertor. I have never found any debris in pan, however fluid although not burnt smelling usually comes out gray colored. They want over 2k to rebuild.
Seeing car has 104k on it, I am thinking of getting trans/convertor from a wrecked 2004g prix with 12k on it for $500. If I can get this car to 150000 miles that would be fine with me then on to another car.
I am a decent wrench and have rebuilt replaced several RWD trans in older muscle cars as well as reuilt th400s m22s etc. I never have taken a fwd trans out. I have a 4 post lift, air tools engine hoist etc etc. Not afraid to tackle but a guide of some sort would help. I dont have a helms although I could order one if needed ( het to spend money if this is easy job). Any one have any hints or help for me? ANy special tools etc? I would love to save $1500 on this.
Thanks
Ryan

I have a 04 grand prix GT2 with a studder in the shifting, it revs up 500 rpms and doesnt speed up while it does that, then shifts. But as far as replacing a FWD transmition, its pretty easy, probably 5-7 hours taking it out and putting it in. I had problems with my 94 grand prix that I had to put in and take out 5 different transmitions before we found a good one. You way it sound, you've got all the basic tools you'll need for it, just take the motor mounts on the sub-frame off, disconnect all wire harnest, unbolt struts, disconnect your steering knuckle, and take small axles out of transmition, then take the hoist, lower the motor and transmition on blocks and find a place to hook hoist on car and lift car high enough to make working on it a breeze. Hope this helps and good luck with replacing it!
