Need to replace rear axle bearing & seal, How hard a task is this for a guy to do at home? I'm told that the retainer plate behind the axle hub is the only thing that holds the axle in place? Is this correct?

It isn't a fun job. However, you can do it. As far as the axle, the retainer is what holds it in. Be very careful removing and replacing the axle so you don't damage the new seals or you'll have a leak again.
