I have a 1993 pontiac grand am with a growling, sounds like strip teeth on a spline under acceleration, rh side. At first I thought it was the bearing hub or cv-joint. I pulled the hub off and it rotates smoothly. Pulled cv, checked splines and they are good. Also pulled rubber boots back, could not see any problems. The splines in the transmision look good too. This is a 4-cly automatic. The car has over 100,000 miles. Can it be inside the transmission?

Check the left side too. Jack the vehicle up, apply the parking brake and put the vehicle in neutral. Spin the wheel while touching the spring on the strut. If you feel any vibration going through the spring, then that's the side that's bad. Usually if it sounds like it's coming from the right then check the left first.
