2001 Pontiac Grand Am

I am looking to purchase a 2001 pontiac grand am for $3000. It has 134,000 miles. (Being a female, I am not familiar with any of the parts on the car). The body is in excellent shape and so is the interior. All electronics work. I drove the car and as far as I can tell, it runs great. Problem: It is at an auto repair shop and the gentleman was honest enough to tell me that the car had a cracked head which he just replace with a brand new one. Will I have future problems with this? I have no idea what that means. He told me that the car has to go through inspection and pass before he can sell it to me. Maybe this is something I shouldn't do. Please advise.

Thanks! Geri

A cracked cylinder head is a big issue, but if it was replaced with new then there shouldn't be a problem. You may want to ask what caused the cylinder head to crack in the first place. This is usually due to an overheating issue. So if the overheating issue wasn't fixed than there is a chance that it will happen again to the new head.

Thanks so much for the reply. I feel much better. This may sound ignorant. I have a 30 day warranty, would the overheating issue be known within that time frame? I really appreciate the help!

Yes, you would notice it within a time or two of driving it for more than 10 minutes or so. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge and also check the radiator coolant level. If the coolant level stays up and the gauge reads normal than i'd say the repairs were made properly.

Thanks so much! You have been very helpful. I am planning to purchase the car. I am trying to get a friend of mine who is familiar with cars to stop and look at it before I do. Thanks again, you made my decision an easier one.
