1998 Pontiac Grand Am Stalls/Excessive Acceleration

Engine Performance problem
1998 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 170000 miles

The car will accelerate when idling or going at very low speeds (at or near idle speed). The engine will also die on occasion. When this happens (dies), it has started right up and been okay after that. Acceralation is the more common problem of the 2 problems. Both problems happen radomly and I hate to bring into someplace since most of the time the car works very well. Any ideas? Thanks!
