Have a 91 grand am, with a quad 4,119000 miles
symptoms: after running car for 25, 30, miles, the car stalls at any stop sign, or slowing down. Will start right
back up, but will stall ones in gear. Put in park, will start up until you put in gear. After about 5 min, will go into gear, but fell like the car is in overdrive, no power. Put car into low gear manually, and floor it it will take off, but still
not shiftin good.I got told the I.A.C. IS BAD. And the no # 2 injector is bad. Will this fix this? They want $600
to fix. Am concern adout the tranny problem

thanks

I wouldn't go that far. Does the car break 45-50MPH before stalling? If this is the case then you will need to replace the Torque Convertor Clutch Solenoid. I just had this done in my 92 Quad 4. Cost me $300 and about $30 to clean the I.A.C. If you go this route you will need to do a transmission service (about $80-$120).

What I was getting at is do you exceed 45-50mph at any time prior to coming to a stop? Meaning if you drove it around the block for 25 minutes going 10-15mph does the car still stall? I'm trying to see a pattern in the stalling and eliminate a popular and most often overlooked problem with the car.

Sorry about that. To anwser your question, yes we go well over 45/50 mph. And still you can tell when you start slowing down to a red light, or a left or right hand turn the car will start to stall and if it does stall it will still start right back up and once you put it in gear it will stall again. After about 5 minutes once you do get it in gear again it feels like the car is in over drive and you have to shift manually and it still shifts terrible. I just want to know what step I should try first (the cheapest way out) or do I get rid of it? Any more advice would be appreciated.

This is a torque convertor clutch solenoid problem. On the Quad 4 engine the t.C.C. Solenoid is located in the side transmission pan. The part runs about $70-$80 in this vehicle and is NO fun to replace. You will also need to do a transmission fluid exchange after removing the pan.

SvS_Wtf has probably never done it in this car before. I can tell.
