1983 Firebird Fuel Gauge Problem

I have a 1983 Firebird with 2.5L 4Cyl engine, and im having a problem with my fuel gauge. When I have the car turned off my fuel gauge reads 1/4 tank of gas, but when I turn the car on, the gauge reads empty. Also I have a full tank of gas.

Walter,
Have you checked the ground on the sending unit and or replace the sending unit. It doesnt sound like it is the guage itself but the sending unit is bad. I hope this helps you out.
