2003 Bonneville Steering Noise

2003 Pontiac Bonneville with 80,000 miles. I hear and feel a knocking noise when turning steering wheel in either direction. I had the intermediate steering shaft replaced about 7500 miles ago and the noise went away, but now it's back. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

Check the rack of pinion or the power steering fluid level.

there's a technical service bulletin on this. the issue seems to be the intermediate shaft. i've heard it doesn't need replaced but needs to be lubricated. pontiac sells a 15 dollar kit to do it, but it's a 1.5 hour job. either way it apparently doesn't solve the problem forever. the sound comes back. i'm told it's an annoyance, not a safety issue, but i'm not a mechanic and so don't take my word on it.
