1990 Plymouth Laser 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 185000 miles

I replaced the altenater and the battery the parts store checked and said the altenater is good but the battery won't charge and when the battery is dead the car won't run. I recharge the battery and it runs but still won't recharge.
