Brake light problems

I have a 1992 Plymouth Acclaim, 180,000 miles. The Brake light switch is broken, it wrapped itself around the steering column. How do I replace it? I got all of the old parts out, but can't get the new switch in. Do I have to take the entire steering column out? My auto repair manual doesn't cover this item.

How the hell did that happen? If thats the case you most likely will have to take out the column. Those are hard to get at so yea. When you press on the brake, you dont hear a click?
