Acclaim rattle at start up!

I have my daughters 89 Acclaim, automatic, with 90m on it. The car was always serviced regularly by her grandfather. She developed a rattle at start up that a couple of places told her was the bearings and needed a new engine! But, there is no oil loss and the engine purrs and runs fine except when it starts and at low idle. I traced the sound to the area of the starter. The rattle is sometimes loud and sometimes not. When the engine rpms down to an idle it develops an intermittent rattle also. Before I tear it apart, could it be a broken flywheel or damaged starter gear?

yeah, i'm thinking the flex plate/flywheel is cracked around where it bolts to the engine.
