1991 Plymouth Acclaim

My car has approximately 27K miles and has the V-6 engine with automatic transmission. We were out driving the other day and pulled out to pass. The throttle stuck at approximately 5,000 rpm. I was able to stand on the brakes and avoid an accident. Since then the idle sits at around 2,200 rpm and will go up to around 3,000 rpm and stick when you hit the gas pedal. It does not appear to be a mechanical bind
( cable). Any ides on where to start looknig?
