Transmission problem
2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 135000 miles

I am having a problem with our transmission. It was shifting from gear to gear no problem. Then all of a sudden as I turned a corner and accelerated, it would not engage. It was as if it was in neutral. It then started to move. As I came to another stop and started again, same problem but this time I had to put the van in 1st then 2nd then 3rd then eventually I could put it in drive. Then I stopped again to turn, I had to do the same thing but this time I could not go passed 3rd. As it was driving there was a whining sound. It wasn't very loud but i could hear it as I accelerated and deccelrated.

Any ideas what is wrong?
