I have a 1999 oldsmobile intrigue 3.5 engine. There is a rattling sound that I think is coming from my water pump. My car overheated on me at 60mph and instead of stopping I continued to drive it approximately 2.5mls before I could pull it over and park it. I am going to attemp replacement myself. All I have going for me is the ability to read a Chiltons manual. I am financially unable to pay a mechanic. Should I attemp this and is there anything I should know before I proceed?

Is the engine locked-up? Get a short piece of hose and start it and listen for the same noise at the water pump area. Is it there.

Remove the thermostat and observe whether its running hot.

Check the oil if its mixed with coolant or oil in coolant.

there is no coolant in the oil and a somebody showed me where the water pump is and the sound is coming from there. Should I attemp to replace it myself? The engine has not locked up. I can still start it.

Go for it-just mark or take a pic the stuff that might be complicated to put back together. Put your 100% devotion to it-don't panic-its a piece of cake. Heck, if I was there I'll supervixe and have few while you go at it.

Note: I don't believe on Permatex sealant-its cleaniness with a gasket.

Good Luck!
